We Warned Them

Slowly the snow is finally melting. It is a welcomed sight for us in the PNW. We just are not used to the white stuff in our yards, on our roofs and generally in our way for so long.

We tried to explain to others how bad our unplowed street was but still they insisted on visiting us (we're so entertaining). So this is what happened.
We Almost Made It

This should just take a few shovel-fulls

Oh, rats, more digging

With the added help of a good neighbor

See -- I told you we'd make it!

All this effort just to visit with little, old me -- I'm so blessed.

SNOW, Snow and more snow

For those of you who live in an area where snow in the winter is not news I apologize for being such a reactionary. But, here in the PNW snow is BIG news when it happens especially this much at one time.

Our neighbors house

Church services were cancelled. Schools are not opening. Many stores are open only for a few hours during mid-day.

The road to Quirky Cottage is under this big tree

There is 15 inches outside our door and it is STILL SNOWING.

Fortunately we still have power -- some people don't. This is a great time for me to do some of the reading I've been wanting to do.

We have had one casualty. Cottage Master was shoveling a walkway and when he wiped the sweat from his brow he discovered that he was no longer wearing his eyeglasses. No amount of retracing his steps and digging in the snow uncovered them.

Personally, I don’t understand how someone could have their glasses drop off and not notice it – but DD says it makes sense to her. She always did like him better!!!!!!

Last Day

We leave the coast tomorrow. Hopefully we won't run into icy roads in Portland on our way home. We've had a VERY restful vacation.

We went into Depoe Bay and had one last bowl of clam chowder here . . .

And then watched the waves splash against the seawall.

It started doing this . . .

so we hurried back to our cozy condo

Storm Brewing

Winds kicking up again. Snow expected during the night.

The wind creates extra spray in the air as the waves work their way onto the beach.

WE GOT SNOW!
Snow is a bit unusual for this part of the Oregon coast so it was special to see it.
A few miles inland they are struggling with snow and ice. We are staying cozy in our condo.
There was a dusting of snow on the ground in the morning. The drama was on the rock just outside of our living room. This ice testifies to the below freezing temperatures we are experiencing.

Tale of Two Lamps

The décor at the condo is modern neutral. This brown lamp is one of a pair in the living room. Note the wide upper section and the narrowness of the base.
This second lamp is one of a pair in the master bedroom.
I’ve never seen a lamp on stilts before. I have spent an inordinate amount of time pondering the design of this lamp.
Did the designer notice that it was too tippy after it was made and decided that the stilts would give it more stability?
In case of a flood the waters would have to be 2 inches higher in order for the lamp to be swamped?
Did the designer make a deal with the brother-in-law who had too much scrap metal on hand?
No one can convince me that someone said to the designer – hey, I really like that, please make 400 more.

Vacation Day Two

Sixty mile per hour wind during the night made the patio chairs rattle against the ropes that the management had used to secure them to the posts. We woke up several times and went to the patio door to peer into the darkness.

We were thankful that the power stayed on. Last year, during a similar storm, trees fell in the Coast Range pass knocking out the power for two days. We weren’t sorry we had missed that storm.

High tide was at noon today. I went into the city of Depoe Bay to see how high the waves went when they hit the seawall.

I wasn't the only one standing in the wind taking pictures

The air was clear -- this is not fog you see but spray from the waves

This bird was so close to me I could have petted it.
People = food to them.

In just the few minutes that I was out in the wind my hands were numb from the cold so I got back into the car, drove and parked on the opposite side of the street to get these pictures.

Just about the time I was patting myself on the back for being so clever -- I got a face full of ocean. I was forced to go back to the condo to dry off, warm up and clean my camera. Later, when I was eating I still could taste salt on my lips. Blaa, that water is NOT clean -- fish function in it!

Vacation Day One

We made our way south on Interstate 5 into strong headwinds and pelting rain with only a 30 minute respite between Portland and Salem, Oregon. At one point visibility was only a few car lengths.

When we started westbound from Salem the wind and rain once again was our constant companion. We arrived in Lincoln City, Oregon and found patches of blue sky and more strong winds.

Storms of rain and snow are expected here this weekend. We can’t believe our luck. This is the kind of weather that we love. We are looking forward to a wild ride as we stay tucked in our cozy condo by the sea.
We stopped at Mo’s for a bowl of clam chowder. Then we ducked into a glass blowing shop and watched while this woman made a red glass. When we came in she told us that she was making a wine glass but then when she finished it was a bit shorter than she wanted it to be and she said maybe it was a sherry glass instead.

The sun was shining but there were very few people on the streets of Depoe Bay. The waves on the surface were choppy and foamy. It promises to be even more dramatic tomorrow.
