This little house was tucked back against the trunk of the cedar tree when we moved here. I relocated it to an outer branch so that it would be more easily seen. But it has remained unoccupied spring after spring.
I was so excited a few weeks ago when a pair of chickadees were checking the place out. Each one of them entered the house and stayed for several minutes. They did this over and over that afternoon. Then the next morning they were back and I had a great big smile on my face.
But alas, it was not to last. They did not return to raise a family. This neighborhood must have tough competition. There is fresh water nearby, and the feeders are a few feet away so it must be the house itself. I'm going to take it down and inspect it carefully to see if I can tell why it has been rejected. Any thoughts?rita

Maybe it was too close to your house (and activity)? I had two loaves of bread go bad this week and I put one on the deck and one out in the yard for the birdies. The yard food was gobbled, but they're staying away from the deck. My guess is they'd much rather stay away from the danger of our activity if it's possible. Maybe your neighbors offered a more private abode?
