Shopping Experience

The Cottage Master has been doing the majority of the grocery shopping for the past 4 or 5 years now. My shopping has been predominately at Goodwill, Value Village, and garage sales during this time. I’ll run into the Wal-Mart, Target and occasionally a Safeway store to buy bits and pieces but not for serious shopping. I haven’t missed serious shopping during the time but every-so-often I get the bug to S-H-O-P.

This weekend hubs and I went to Costco together. I had a couple of things on my list and it had been such a long time since I just “went shopping” I assumed that there would be a plethora of tempting items to fondle. After picking up the package of 12 rolls of paper towels (that will last for a year or more) and stopping to visit with a friend who was there, too, I began to wander up and down the isles looking for things that I’ve never seen or thought of before. It wasn’t long before I complained to hubs, “Everything here is brand new.” Nothing had any charm or unique character. I wasn’t tempted by all of the new books or DVDs. I’ve gotten all the books and movies that we’ve wanted from our public library system for free. Of course, we have to give them back after a few weeks, but that helps to keep our house uncluttered!!! The experience started me to make a mental list of things that I would never consider buying used. Food, undies and toiletries topped the list and I wouldn’t want to buy a used computer when I needed an upgrade. But after that everything else was up for grabs. Given the right set of circumstances I’m not opposed to purchasing a pre-owned car, appliance or clothing. What is on your list of absolutely will not buy used?

Costco is enough to set me over the edge. It's so busy all of the time.

I think that what I refuse to buy used is clothes. I have a tough time with that.

Happy Thursday!

We've had bad luck buying used electronics. It's probably fine, but I think at this point we'll buy a new TV or phone instead of someone's falling down oldster. Also it's hard to find good quality cookware that's pre-owned.

Different thought though, but I can't understand why used FURNITURE is so distasteful to everyone else! I get that someone else SAT in that chair... but is that the only reason it's .01% of the original price? Good condition furniture, cars, linens, even mattresses are fair game (even sought after for bargains) in our household!

On the other hand, I used to have a funny picture (I'm sure was a spoof) of a garage sale sign posted on the street with a handmade sign underneath it promoting, "Furniture, clothes and gently used adult toys, 2 blocks right". hahahahaha

I have found that there are shoppers and those of us who are not shoppers.
When I visited my friend Stacy the other day she said "ooh! they have outlet shopping at Pigeon Forge." Now, this is not the reason we are going and I hope that I will not have to even enter one of those places. While I may hit some of the little crafty stores in the area to look for Christmas gifts (I know, I know) shopping is not on my list of fun things to do.
I also love previously loved items. Like people the older you are the more character you have.
